Women's Policy Institute

Date:   September 2021 - June 2022

Estimated Attendance:    15

Advocacy is a powerful tool to hold government and other centers of power to account. With our mission to achieve gender equity through systemic change, the Women’s Policy Institute is a nine (9) month program designed to train women to be strong policy advocates at the state and local level. While college experience is not required, you might think of this as a graduate-level course with hands-on application.

The program teaches public policy and strategic communication skills to grassroots leaders, increasing their participation in policy formation and implementation and prepares them to lead ongoing advocacy and policy work. Each cohort chooses a policy initiative that they will champion throughout the program. Examples include support of the Temporary Caregiver Insurance Act, workplace pregnancy protections, the RI Parentage Act, and repealing the “Tampon Tax”.

WFRI chooses participants who demonstrate the potential to lead and become change-makers. Skills learned include research, bill language development, finding bill sponsors, and creating and implementing a communications strategy that motivates people into action.

Your sponsorship directly grows the number of women leaders working towards an equitable Rhode Island.
